Eliasson began incorporating driftwood into his work through a project in Iceland, where wood washed ashore has long been valued as a precious resource. Here, driftwood serves as support for the glass. The contrast between the light passing through the circular window and the light reflected by the silver-colored circle, together with the distortions and overlapping layers of the colored glass, creates organic gradations. These effects evoke various optical phenomena found in nature. As the title suggests, if global warming were to bring ocean currents to a halt, driftwood would no longer wash ashore. This convergence of planetary environmental concerns and natural phenomena is characteristic of Eliasson’s practice.
