This work was created in collaboration with Yuki Nara and the Italian furniture brand Poltrona Frau. Nara designed this pedestal model specifically for this collaboration and created a limited series featuring Poltrona Frau’s craftsmanship and high-quality “Pelle Frau®” leather. Stretched over a structure resembling a thick tree trunk, the leather has deliberately been left with traces of the time it was part of a living cow, such as wrinkles and areas with greater slack.
“Bone Flower_1/f” is part of the artist’s signature “Bone Flower” series but was created based on a unique concept. The work draws inspiration from “1/f fluctuation”, an irregularity observed in a range of phenomena from the natural world, from flickering flames to sunlight filtering through trees, and which people find comforting. He fired the piece at a heat approximately 70 degrees higher than usual to deliberately encourage the clay to “move” under high heat. One would normally expect an effort to control the clay, and the movement adds a relaxed sense to the form. When used as a vase, this work will readily accommodate the plants’ organic forms.
