RITSUE MISHIMA
FRUTTO 2
Year: 2014
Medium: glass
Dimensions: 30.3 x 20.2 x 19.5 cm (11 7/8 x 8 x 7 5/8 in.)
Acquired from SBI Art Auction, 2023
Having been unable to find an existing vase to her taste to display a single flower in her apartment, Mishima was inspired by a friend’s suggestion to make one for herself, and started visiting workshops on Murano Island. This marked the beginning of her journey into glass artistry that continues to this day. The shape of this piece, with its thin, stem-like neck tilted slightly to the side, seems perfect for a single flower. As the title suggests, the piece has a large, round, fruit-like body, which evokes the production process: heated glass is gently expanded as breath is blown into it. Simple, round, and slightly thicker forms sporadically decorate the curved surface of the body. The gentle vessel mediates contact between glass and the human touch—its soft contours inviting the supporting hand as one reaches to insert a flower.
