AKI KONDO
Summer Candies
Year: 2016
Medium: oil on canvas
Dimensions: 90 x 65 cm (35 3/8 x 25 1/2 in.)
Acquired from ShugoArts, 2022
This work depicts vivid warm-toned flowers against a deep blue background. The flowers are in full bloom with large petals, yet their lives are fleeting. Kondo has created numerous flower-themed works. Offering of flowers, flowers for celebrations, or casually decorating flowers for a dining table. When people pick flowers, the meaning behind this act differs from one another, but the flowers that Kondo depicts suggest the relationship with the “companion” that lies beyond. Since flowers bloom for prosperity and as an act of connecting life, Kondo discovers the theme of “living” within flowers. To live, one must engage with others and the world around them.
