ISSEI SUZUKI
composite 1
Year: 2022
Medium: oil, acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 72.7 x 60.6 cm (28 5/8 x 23 7/8 in.)
Acquired from roid works gallery, 2022
This work is depicted with marble-like mixtures of colors and natural streamlines as background, which is directly opposed by layering of extremely vivid hues of colors. The painting is then split into fragments and forms a combination of geometric and decorative patterns. The only concrete human-like silhouette is depicted in the center of the painting. However, there are no eyes, not even a nose on his face. It is a combination of peaky colors close to primary colors and a graphic composition without context. Suzuki defies interpretation on this work to his viewers. While disguising to such an extent, the artist utterly avoids the key to interpret the allegory and symbol of this work to viewers, the painting has turned out to be a mere shell of colors and forms. This approach may seem close to abstract expression and minimalist thinking, yet it shows a uniqueness of no similarities to both.
