MARC QUINN

Thick Pink Nervous Breakdown
Born in London, UK, in 1964. Quinn completed his degree in Art History from the University of Cambridge in 1985 and is counted as one of the YBA (Young British Artists). Quinn debuted with “Self” (1991), a head sculpture of himself made from his congealed blood, and the same work has been recreated every five years since. Quinn has consistently created works related to life and the human body. Among the frozen flower installations, realistic paintings of raw meat, and embryo sculptures, Quinn's most widely known work is “Alison Lapper Pregnant”, which adorned the Fourth Plinth of Trafalgar Square in London from 2005 to 2007 (a program that gives the selected sculptors the right to exhibit their work for a set period) and served as a symbol for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. As he continues to strongly raise the fundamental question of what life is, Quinn's expression is at times radical and always steps on even the verge of touching on the dignity of life and taboos. For Quinn, there is beauty to be pursued in areas that others might avoid, and through his actions, he brings issues to the surface and encourages discussion on what people tend to turn away from. His major solo exhibitions include Arken Museum of Modern Art (Copenhagen), Fondazione Prada (2017), Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Málaga (2014), Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice (2012), Tate Liverpool (2002) and so on. He has also participated in numerous international exhibitions.
