1932年ドレスデン(DE)生まれ。現代最高峰と目されている画家の一人。「フォト・ペインティング」、「アブストラクト」、「カラー・チャート」、「鏡」、「グレイペインティング」、「ストライプ」、「アトラス」、「オーバーペインテッド・フォトグラフ」などの多岐にわたる表現があり、そのいずれにおいても高い次元に到達している。時に、敬意を持って「”styleless” style」とも評される。具象イメージから抽象表現、色彩から無彩色まで、およそ絵画の持てる振幅の最大値をたった一人で実現している。絵画とは一体何を表し得るものであるのか、というあまりに大きなテーマがリヒターの生涯に沿って横たわっている。ポンピドゥー・センター(パリ)、テート・ギャラリー(ロンドン)、ニューヨーク近代美術館、テート・モダン(ロンドン)、メトロポリタン美術館(NY)など、主要美術館で個展を開催、名実ともに最重要現存作家の一人である。
