SHINGO FRANCIS

Emerald in Teal
Francis was born in 1969 in Santa Monica, California and received his BA degree from Pitzer College in Claremont in 1992, and a MFA degree from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 2017. He is the son of Sam Francis, who is a follower of Abstract Expressionism and Art Informel movements, and his mother Mako Idematsu, a pioneering media artist. Francis is highly recognized for his abstract works from "Blue's Silence" series - paintings covered in blue color reminiscent of the deep sea. But in recent years, he has mainly focused on “Interference” series using paints with unique reflective properties and has consistently pursued the expression of light and color abstraction. Francis has held numerous solo and group exhibitions at Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art (Chiba, 2012), Durst Organization Lobby Gallery (New York, 2013), Ichihara Lakeside Museum (Chiba, 2017), Sezon Museum of Modern Art (Karuizawa, 2018), and Martin Museum of Art (Texas, 2019) etc. His works have been acquired by JP Morgan Chase Art Collection, Bank of Spain, Frederick R. Weismann Art Foundation, Mori Arts Center Gallery, Sezon Museum of Modern Art, and Tokyo American Club etc.
