KAPWANI KIWANGA
Kapwani Kiwanga was born in Hamilton, Canada, in 1978. She earned her degree in anthropology and comparative religion at McGill University in Montreal in 2002. Accolades include the Sobey Art Award (2018), the Marcel Duchamp Prize (2020), the Zurich Art Prize (2022), and the Joan Miró Prize (2025). She also represented Canada at its pavilion during the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024. With her work, Kiwanga delves into various archives concerning the structural issues that bring about asymmetries of power in contemporary society. The artist poses questions to society through the narratives she presents based on meticulous research, and yet skillfully interweaving fact and fiction, they unearth once more the histories of those who have been marginalized, oppressed, and forgotten. Kiwanga takes advantage of a wide range of expressive forms in her practice, from sculpture and mixed media to installation and performance.
