BOSCO SODI

untitled (Urushi Series)
Bosco Sodi was born in Mexico City in 1970, and learned painting from a young age. After completing studies in chemistry and engineering, he attended Grisart (Barcelona), where he majored in photography from 2001 to 2002. Sodi is known for paintings with bold protuberances and cracks, as well as large installations in brick and clay. His works make frequent use of natural materials other than paint, such as wood pulp, earth, and rock. Artists from earlier generations such as those associated with Art Informel, color field painting, and Mono-ha have attempted in various ways to find a harmony of material and expression, and in Sodi’s works can be understood as a spiritual continuation of such efforts. In 2014, Sodi established the Fundación Casa Wabi, with a headquarters designed by Tadao Ando, in his home region of Oaxaca, Mexico. This non-profit operates programs to support artists with studios, residencies, and exhibition opportunities, and is now active across three locations, having expanded into Mexico City and Tokyo. He has held numerous solo exhibitions, and has frequently participated in group and international exhibitions around the world. His works have also been acquired by the Walker Art Center (US), the National Gallery of Victoria (AU), 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (Japan), and many other contemporary art museums and prominent collections.
