LAUREN QUIN

Third Belly
Born in Los Angeles, California (US) in 1992, Quin graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015, followed by participating in a residency program at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2017. In 2019, she obtained a master’s degree from the Yale School of Art. Quin’s distinctive drawing style known as “Tube” is a defining characteristic of her paintings, which is influenced by the “Tubism” of Fernand Léger, a famous French Cubist artist. Through gradation, the strokes which literally look like tubes, move freely across the painting in every direction. Furthermore, lines that derived from Quin’s own archive of drawings are superimposed on the strokes, creating a juxtaposition of lines with completely different textures. Then, in the short time it takes for the paint to dry on the canvas, more lines of petroglyph (carving) are overlayed. Quin’s first solo museum exhibition was held at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (Overland Park, Kansas) in 2023. Her works are in the collections of public and private contemporary art museums around the world, including the Columbus Museum of Art (Ohio), Dallas Museum of Art (Texas), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, High Museum of Art (Atlanta, Georgia), Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, Long Museum (Shanghai), Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Phoenix Art Museum (Arizona), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, Minnesota), Yuz Museum (Shanghai), etc.
