KOHEI YAMADA

untitled
Born in Osaka, Japan in 1997, Yamada graduated from the Department Oil Painting of Musashino Art University in 2020 and completed the Master’s program in the same field at the Department of Fine and Applied Arts of Kyoto University of the Arts in 2022. Yamada’s paintings reveal a clear layering. While many artists refer to the surface layer that results from the accumulation of lines and colored surfaces as the painting itself, Yamada seems to consider the depth hidden beneath these layers as the essence of the painting. The vivid yellow hues symbolically appear in the painting are one of the first colors to be applied to the canvas, but what the viewer sees is only a small glimpse of what remains. The major part of the completed painting is occupied by basic colors such as red and blue, which are close to primary colors, with sharp but sturdy line depictions in black. Over half a century after Color Field artists freed colors from their slavery of imagery, Yamada’s abstract paintings prove that color itself can possess materiality. He also proves that the act of layering colors on the canvas itself comes into existence as a painting. Yamada’s works are created by the mystery between the layered paints and the paints left behind, even if accidental, showing a magical allure of color. In addition to being selected for the CAF Award (organized by the Contemporary Art Foundation) in 2020, Yamada also has held a solo exhibition at Daikanyama Hillside Terrace Annex A and received attention at art fairs such as ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO (2020, 2021) and Tokyo Gendai (2023).
