DIEGO

Standing straight
Born in 1986. DIEGO did not receive any professional art training, and has been active since his interest in street art as a teenager. DIEGO is a key member of the SIDE CORE, a pioneering street art collective in Japan. He exhibits his street art in white cube (gallery aesthetic). Just like interlacing strands within cities to avoid being noticed, street artists draw a line between the mainstream. DIEGO is no exception. His street art is more ambiguous than others. Why must graffiti be limited to the streets (outdoors)? And why not challenge the constraints of canvas and having white cubes? If there is no clear reason for that, it is DIEGO and SIDE CORE that go beyond and surpass such unspoken rules. To the artist, it is not necessary to follow academic or marketing principles. DIEGO brings in indisputable absurdities (the so-called authoritative structure of the art industry) to exhibit at white cube galleries. There is no limitation on dynamism on the street, not bound by skills or theories. In addition to play as a key role in EVERYDAY HOLIDAY SQUAD, a collective derived from SIDE CORE, DIEGO collaborates with street artists from around the world and presides over the “LEGAL SHUTTER TOKYO” project. He also participated in the exhibition “Bubblewrap…” curated by Kaikai Kiki Takashi Murakami (Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto 2018-19) where large-scale installation was introduced.
