1965年ブリストル(UK)生まれ。90年代、YBAs(Young British Artists)として耳目を集めた若き現代美術の新星であったハーストのキャリアは、名門ロンドン大学ゴールドスミス・カレッジ在学時に学生自主企画展「Freeze」においてチャールズ・サーチ(コレクター)に見染められたことに端を発する。タブーを恐れぬ作風で知られ、サメのホルマリン漬けや、牛の頭がハエにたかられ朽ちていく作品、ダイヤを散りばめた髑髏、薬剤(薬物)、昆虫、「スピン・ペインティング」、「スポット・ペインティング」など、どの作品も常に生と死のアレゴリーを過激に用いて論争の的となってきた。2008年、オークションハウスのサザビーズ・ロンドンにおいて、アーティスト自身が223点もの自作を売り立て、結果、総額1億1100万ポンド(当時のレートで21億円程度)に上った。2015年にはハーストが買い集めたコレクションを展示するためのNewport Street Galleryをオープン、世界のトップ・コレクターの一人でもある。
