1967年コペンハーゲン(DK)生まれ。1995年デンマーク王立美術院を卒業。2003年にTate Modernにおいて発表した「The Whether Project」で一躍その名を世界中に知らしめた。太陽を模した巨大なオレンジの光が人工的な霧がかかったホールに吊るされ、人々は床に寝そべって天井一面に貼られた鏡にぼんやりと映る自分達の姿を見上げながら過ごした。オラファーの作品は常に、光と、空間と、そして鑑賞者の目を必要とする。自然現象を人工的に再現する、あるいは模倣することで、人々を擬似的な環境におく。地球規模の気候・環境問題やエネルギー問題なども作家にとっては作品と地続きであり、ベルリンに置かれているスタジオ・オラファー・エリアソンは、作品のプロダクションだけではなく、作家の作品制作の動機である空間認知に関する研究や環境問題に対する取り組みのための拠点となっている。2014年にウルフ賞芸術部門、2023年に高松宮殿下記念世界文化賞を受賞。
